Sri Dattatreyar Jayanthi

Datta Jayanti is a Hindu festival celebrated to commemorate the day of the birth of Lord Datta, that is, the day that the Datta Principle became active on earth. This festival is celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Margashirsha.

Datta means one who has been bestowed with the spiritual experience of the unmanifest God Principle, that is, one who has attained Final Liberation.

From the spiritual standpoint the implied meaning of the Sanskrut word, Atri is as follows. 'A' means absent ('A' indicates negation in Sanskrut) and 'tri' means the triad. Hence, 'Atri' is one, who is devoid of the trilogies like states of awake-dream-deep sleep, ’sattva-raja-tama’ or one who meditates is the object of meditation and signifies meditation itself. The intellect of such an Atri is pure, that is, without any asuya (desire-anger) and free from the six kinds of action (for details, refer the Sanatan's booklets on Shiva and Shakti). The Datta Principle is born of the resolve (sankalpa) of such pure intellect.

The objects in his hand Kamandalam and Japamala represents Lord Brahma, Sankh (conch) and Chakram represents Lord Vishnu and Trisoolam and Damaru represents Lord Shiva.

Lord Dattaatreya incorporates the trinity of the Hindu pantheon. Lord Dattaatreya is the remover of mental anxieties. He anchors a person, removing doubt and vacillation. He is also Sri Karthaveeryarjuna‘s guru.

Lord Dattaatreya is the giver of the 64 skills that a human can master. Maha Meru also grants the same. Thus, Lord Dattaatreya is on par with the Maha Meru.

Lord Dattaatreya relieves one of mental anxiety. To his devotees just the call of “Datta” stabilizes a vacillating mind. Mental anxiety begets ailments.  Lord Dattaatreya also bestows the boons of penance.

LORD DATTATREYAR AT DANVANTRI PEEDAM

The Dattaatreya idol at Danvnatri Peedam is made of green stone. The four dogs on the pedestal symbolize the four Vedas. The Govardhana Kamadhenu stands behind Him. Lord Dattaatreya was installed here, as Lord Kaartheevarayarjuna was already in residence.

The benefits in worshipping Lord Datta are that he prevents and resolves problems of negative energy due to unsatisfied ancestors' souls.  The atmosphere in the house remains blissful as the ancestors get momentum to go to the next subtle plane of existence.

Regular pooja is done on Thursdays and Special pooja, Datta homam, abishekam, alankaram and archanai is done on Amavasai & Pournami and on Saturday, 10th December 2011 on the occasion of DATTA JAYANTHI for Lord Dattatreyar at Danvantri Peedam, Walajapet.
